WELCOME HOME LITTLE LOTL!
What You Need To Get You Started
CHOOSE WISELY
Don't just get an axolotl because they're cute. Really think. Can I afford all the equipment? Where is a reputable breeder either online or near me? What will I do if it gets sick? Do I have the time to commit to caring for it twice a day when it's little? Write down why you want a lotl and think about it for a week. If you're still committed, then go for it!
WHERE THEY WILL LIVE:
A PLASTIC TUB!
Believe it or not, until they are about 5 inches long, they need to live in a plastic tub! You need to change the water every day (twice a day if its really gunky). I like to have sharpie marks on the bottom for every inch so I can keep track of how fast they grow (which is really darn fast!)
WHAT DO THEY EAT: WORMS!
If you want and axolotl, you will have to be ok with all kinds of worms. Live ones, cutting up live ones, dead ones, frozen ones, all kinds of worms.
See my blog post on feeding your lotl HERE to learn what you will need. In summary: a turkey baster, aquarium tweezers, and live black worms (if you can find them) or frozen blood worms.
Now Accessorize!
You need a few more accessories for your lotl even when they're just in the tub.
